Microsoft tried a 4-day workweek in Japan. Productivity jumped 40%

Hong Kong (CNN Business)A growing number of smaller companies are adopting a four-day workweek. Now the results of a recent trial at Microsoft (MSFT) suggest it could work even for the biggest businesses. They suggested that meetings should last no longer than 30 minutes. Employees were also encouraged to cut down on meetings altogether by using an online messaging app (Microsoft’s, of course). The effects were widespread. More than 90% of Microsoft’s 2,280 employees in Japan later said they were impacted by the new measures, according to the company. By shutting down earlier each week, the company was also able to save on other resources, such as electricity. The initiative is timely. Japan has long grappled with a grim — …

This man is running for governor of California so he can run false Facebook ads

New York (CNN Business)A San Francisco man is going to extreme lengths to call out Facebook’s controversial policy of allowing politicians to run false ads on its platform. On Monday morning, he registered as a candidate in California’s 2022 gubernatorial election — not with the primary goal of becoming governor, but so he can run false Facebook ads of his own. Hampton told CNN Business that he will use his new status as a candidate to run false ads on Facebook (FB) about President Trump, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and other Facebook executives. He said he also plans to run false ads on Facebook about executives of Twitter (TWTR), which also has a policy of not fact-checking ads run by …

Facebook will allow UK election candidates to run false ads

London and New York (CNN Business)A controversial policy allowing politicians to run false ads on Facebook will extend to the United Kingdom as the country prepares to vote in a historic December election, Facebook confirmed to CNN Business. Damian Collins, a Conservative member of Parliament who has been spearheading parliamentary hearings on Facebook, told CNN Business Friday: “People shouldn’t be able to spread disinformation during election campaigns just because they are paying Facebook to do so.” After the 2016 referendum, Clegg, who wanted Britain to remain in the European Union, lamented to The Yorkshire Post about “the colossal scale of the lies spread by the Leave campaign.” However, Clegg, who joined Facebook in 2018, does not believe Facebook should be …

Mark Parker to step down as Nike CEO after 13 years

New York (CNN Business)Mark Parker will step down as Nike’s CEO next year after 13 years leading the footwear company, Nike announced Tuesday. Parker’s tenure at Nike has been marred by two major scandals in the past two years. In the spring of 2018 there was an executive overhaul and multiple lawsuits over alleged gender discrimination and a “boys’ club” culture at Nike. More recently, the company shut down its running club, Nike Oregon Project, after longtime coach Alberto Salazar was banned from the sport for four years for anti-doping violations. Parker shot down the idea that those issues were involved in his stepping down as CEO in an interview with CNBC Tuesday. In a note to employees obtained by …

Runaway growth — and dogs In the wake of the Great Recession, entrepreneurs raced to build every type of app-based, on-demand service they could think of — from grocery delivery and meal kits to at-home manicures, laundry pickup, house cleaning and, of course, getting a ride. So why not dog walking? That’s how Jonathan Viner described the lead-up to founding Wag in a podcast interview published last fall. Some locations are Instagram gold. This app helps you find them.

New York (CNN Business)Wonder Bar in Austin is basically an Instagram playground. It has it all: bright yellow banana swings, a bathtub filled with rubber duckies, a rideable unicorn and neon signs galore that say things like “Head in the clouds” and “Searching for Uranus.” But on one quick day trip to Sedona, Arizona, in 2017, Aneloski didn’t have time to find nearby photo locations. That’s when she got the idea to streamline the “location scouting process for creatives,” she told CNN Business. The app is for people who make money off their social media posts, also known as influencers or content creators, as well as millennials who want to find unique — and social media friendly — places while …

People are sick of drinking. Investors are betting on the ‘sober curious’

New York (CNN Business)Getaway in Brooklyn was comfortably full for a Saturday night, when I came in to try my first “shrub” an acidic beverage made from vinegar, fruit, sugar, club soda and zero alcohol. “It’s such a part of the culture, especially here in San Francisco that I would go out for dinner and have two to three drinks everyday,” Silicon Valley entrepreneur Justin Kan, the CEO of law-tech startup Atrium, told CNN Business. He said he has seen a shift recently within his tech circle. “I was at a dinner with a lot of tech people last night and probably half the people weren’t drinking.” Kan announced last month, in a post on Twitter, that he was giving …

New York (CNN Business)Snap, the parent company of messaging app Snapchat, has promoted two executives amid a wider shakeup of its leadership team. Last year, Snap rolled out a poorly received redesign of the Snapchat app, and faced a declining user base and an exodus of top executives, including VP of Marketing Steve LaBella, Chief Strategy Officer Imran Khan and two CFOs. Spiegel — who cofounded the company — has reportedly clashed in the past with some of the high-profile hires who have departed, such as former Snap CFO Tim Stone. In recent months, Spiegel has been on a hiring spree. In April, Snap …

The ‘Jurassic Park’ computer company just got sold for $1.3 billion

New York (CNN Business)Cray has been synonymous with supercomputing for nearly half a century. Now the legendary tech company is joining the business that pioneered Silicon Valley: HP Enterprise. The first Cray computer, the Cray-1, was less than a thousandth the speed of an iPhone XS and had 8 MB of memory (0.2% of the iPhone’s memory). It cost just under $9 million ($33 million in today’s dollars, adjusted for inflation). But Cray computers were a game-changer. They revolutionized weather forecasting simulations decades ago, and they continue to predict weather today. NOAA’s weather-prediction system is built by Cray, Dell (DELL) and IBM (IBM). Supercomputers are also used for national defense and scientific research, among other projects. The human genome was …

Lyft rises 8.7% on its first day of trading

(CNN)For years, Uber tried to bulldoze ahead of Lyft and other rivals through a mix of aggressive fundraising and dirty tricks. At one point in 2017, Uber’s former CEO, Travis Kalanick, was caught bragging on video that it was “a piece of cake” to compete with Lyft. “I’ve beaten them,” he said. Lyft priced its initial public offering at $72 a share on Thursday, valuing the company at around $24 billion. The amount was above its original proposed price range of $62 to $68 a share. In an unusual move, Lyft founders Logan Green and John Zimmer joined other execs to kick off their Wall Street debut at a former car dealership in Los Angeles, thousands of miles from the …

UK spies think they can handle Huawei in 5G networks. The US doesn’t agree

Hong Kong (CNN Business)The United Kingdom could undermine an American-led campaign to keep Chinese tech company Huawei out of super-fast 5G mobile networks around the world. The National Cyber Security Centre declined to comment Monday on the specifics of the Financial Times report but said in a statement that it has “a unique oversight and understanding of Huawei engineering and cyber security.” The intelligence agency is playing an important role in a broader UK government review examining the security of technology that operators plan to use in 5G networks in the country. “The review is looking at a range of options and will conclude in the spring. No decisions have been taken and any suggestion to the contrary is inaccurate,” …
